Project

In recent years, regular alcohol consumption and especially binge drinking has become a mass phenomenon among young people within most European countries. We have only limited information on the factors modulating alcohol binging, and only very limited knowledge exists about the health consequences of alcohol binging across the life-span. Nevertheless, we anticipate major health consequences, enhanced mortality rates, and an increase in the number of alcohol-dependent individuals within the next decades due to current alcohol binging among young people. Therefore, this research topic is of clear importance in both France and the UK, and is at the highest priority level of the European Commission [Deutsche Hauptstelle für Suchtfragen e.V. (DHS) (2008) Binge Drinking and Europe. Hamm:DHS.] Society would benefit appreciably if an understanding and reduction of binge drinking and related harms in young people could be advanced from the results and interpretations from the research proposed by the present project.

Logo AlcoBingeThis is the aim of the cross-border cooperation project AlcoBinge, gathering the skills of 3 research teams (2 French, 1 British) around the binge drinking subject to understand better this phenomenon and to struglle effectively against it.

With a global budget of roughly 2,2 million euros (£ 1.9 million), this project received a financial support of 1,1 million euros from the European cross-border cooperation programme INTERREG IVa France(Channel)-England. This project ha also be supported by the Conseil régional de Picardie with a two-year post-doctoral position.
